This summer we have been on a mission to reduce screen time and find other activities to enjoy. We have tried numerous different arts and craft sets, been on lots of lovely walks and played in the garden but I wanted to find something my daughter could do a bit more independently too, which is where the Fun Lockets Secret Journal comes in.

The Fun Lockets Secret Journal is more than just a notebook, it’s an interactive experience designed to spark excitement and imagination. Aimed at children aged 6 and up, this clever journal offers a unique twist on traditional writing.

What’s Inside the Secret Journal?

The secret journal is filled with over 30 surprises, including:

  • Hidden compartments and keys to unlock
  • Stickers,
  • Stencils,
  • Rubbers,
  • Paper clips
  • Fun tapes
  • A pencil

Children can use the stickers and gems to not only create journal entries but also to personalise their journal using the included accessories, which not only adds a fun, tactile element to the activity but also encourages ownership and pride in their writing.

Our review:

When it arrived my first thought was it is a little bit sexist, very much aimed at girls, all pink and only female models which in todays day and age is a bit dated, there is nothing wrong with boys journaling and I do feel the packaging could be more inclusive. That being said my little girl loved it, it’s everything she wants – glitter, unicorns, gems and rainbows – so if you have a girly girl they will no doubt go crazy when they see this.

When we unboxed it is was just as exciting as we had hoped. Even to open it for the first time you need to find the hidden key (don’t worry there are instructions) and do a few secret moves, all very engaging and impressive. Once opened it is full of little compartments that need to be opened to find keys to open other compartments and so on until you have discovered so many cool little treats. It definitely kept my little one entertinaed for ages. Plus once she had found everything she took great delight in hiding it all again in different places.

Of course, in addition to the extras the main event is the journaling itself and this can be done using the pencil, once you find it, and the lovely little notebook that comes with it and then once finished it can all be locked back up again.

As a mum here are the things I love most about the Fun Locket Secret Journal:

  • Engaging and Interactive: She loved the secret element of unlocking hidden surprises.
  • Creative Encouragement: The accessories promote decorating, drawing, and storytelling.
  • Perfect for Screen-Free Time: It kept her off the screens repeatedly and willingly.
  • Promotes Independence: She needed help the first time but after that she was able to use this independently
  • Encourages Literacy Skills: As the kids are currently not at school this is a great literacy activity that doesn’t feel like she is being made to practice her writing, she is doing it willingly instead.
  • Compact: I love how it doesn’t take up much room
  • Travel: Turns out it’s also a great travel toy and one she wants to take everywhere with her, it will be great when we go away in October.

Overall we love the Fun Locket Secret Journal and think it is a great screen free activity for kids, one that promotes independence and literacy skills in a fun and engaging way. If you are looking for a gift for a child between the ages of 5-8 and I would say this is perfect (although is does say from 6 on the box).
