I’m a busy working mum of two daughters, aged 7 and 2, and I also run my own PR business – so finding ME time is sometimes near on impossible. However, I’ve made it my mission to get 30 minutes per day to myself and here’s how I do just that…

Make Self-Care Non Negotiable

Even during my busiest days, which tend to be a Monday to Friday, I ensure that I have micro-moments throughout the day where I focus on myself. Even if I only get to read two pages of my book, enjoy a 10 minute hot bath or journal – those little micro moments ensure that my self care is non negotiable and something I try to capture each day.

Harnessing the Power of Micro-Routines

Sometimes instead of waiting for a big chunk of my day to do something, I fix in a 2 minute mindful breathing exercise or some quick stretches whilst the children are playing, snacking or fixated on something that doesn’t require my full attention.

Use the Pomodoro Technique

This technique is proven to allow you to get some time aside, even when it feels impossible.  Simply set a 25 minute reminder alarm (I tend to do this on my iPhone alarm) and dedicate that specific block of time to be screen free.

This is a great way for me to ensure I walk the dog during a time that doesn’t suit the rest of the family but myself.

Flow Play Methods For The Kids

Set up activities for the children that allow them to craft, explore or play independently. This can be activities such as building with Lego, colouring-in, or sensory play with safe materials from around the home.

It’s simple but always effective to get in those micro-self care moments.

Organisation Is Key

It sounds ridiculous, but scheduling YOU time into your busy calendar makes it more likely that you will stick to it. Communicate this schedule to your partner or wider family so they understand your commitment.

Delegation

Don’t be afraid to offload home or family chores to somebody else. My husband is great with supporting where he can, but I also delegate chores to my eldest daughter. This will ease your load, and also teach them in the process.

Express Yourself Creatively

For some people, expressing yourself is done through writing, drawing or even photography. For me, I love to listen to some music or a podcast to truly get motivated or inspired. We all need a little boost here and there.

Make Joy Out of Everyday Tasks

Like many mums. I have to cook for my family of four every single day, so every Sunday, I choose new and exciting recipes so my daily chore is more enjoyable and something I actually look forward to doing.

Prioritising YOU time is not self-indulgent, it’s a NEED for your mental wellbeing. There’s so much research to suggest that self-care can improve your overall mental health, boost your energy and also rub off on your relationships.

Give some of these tips and a try, and remember even if you have to micro-dose those moments – it’s better than nothing.
