How Our Children Mirror What’s Unhealed in Us – and How to Use It as a Powerful Invitation to Grow

If you’ve found yourself here, chances are you’ve been carrying a lot. Maybe you feel emotionally exhausted – holding it all together for everyone else, but fraying on the inside. Maybe you’re trying to stay calm, yet feeling like a volcano about to erupt. Maybe you’ve just snapped – the words came out sharper than you meant, your patience vanished in an instant and now you’re left with that sinking feeling in your chest.

You are not broken. Nothing is wrong with you.
These moments don’t make you a bad mum – they make you human.

We’ve all been there.

That rush of guilt. The shame. The voice in your head asking:

💭 “I know better… so, why did I react like that?”
💭 “What’s wrong with me?”
💭 “Why can’t I keep it together?”

Here’s the thing:

It’s not about fixing yourself. It’s about reconnecting – to your body, to your truth

When you’re stressed (and let’s be honest – motherhood is stressful), your nervous system moves into fight, flight, freeze or fawn. When that happens, your logical brain shuts down and your body takes over.

Within your nervous system live patterns and beliefs you’ve been carrying for years – many that aren’t even yours. You absorbed them as a child, especially before the age of seven, when your subconscious was wide open and learning how to “be” in the world.

Those patterns have been quietly shaping your reactions ever since

If you shout or argue, your pattern is one of fight

If you avoid dealing with the situation, your pattern is one of flight

If you withdraw and pretend the situation isn’t happening, your pattern is one of freeze and

If you give in to please eg your child, your pattern is one of fawn

We so often blame ourselves in those moments – or suppress the emotion and push through.

But what if these moments weren’t failures?
What if they were invitations?

Because that’s what they are.
Your body is a wise teacher – showing you where something unhealed is ready to be released.

So how do we realign and reconnect to our truth?

By healing across all five levels – mental, energetic, emotional, physical, and spiritual.

🧠 Mental: Pause and breathe. Once your nervous system settles, ask yourself – “What thought or belief came up just before I reacted? Is this mine, or something I picked up from my family, society, or religion?” Then reframe it into a belief that feels true and empowering.

Energetic: Every thought carries energy. When we don’t clear it, that energy becomes stuck. Use energy-clearing techniques to release what isn’t yours and create space for lighter, higher vibrations.

💧 Emotional: As energy moves, it becomes emotion. Name it. Notice where it lives in your body and what it feels like. Then imagine it softening – transforming into golden light and leaving your body with ease.

🌿 Physical: When emotions stay stuck too long, they show up in the body – as tension, fatigue, or pain. Notice where you hold it. Breathe into it. Ask what emotion lies beneath it. Practices like chakra balancing and somatic release can help you soften and let go.

🌙 Spiritual: Once we’ve worked through the other levels, spiritual healing naturally unfolds. Our thoughts align with truth, our energy becomes clearer, and our emotions flow freely. We begin to feel lighter – more connected to our higher guidance and to the peace that has always been within us.

Secondly by recognising our pattern and using the energy of it to take aligned action

If your pattern is that of fight, use the energy to take courageous steps towards your wants, needs and desires.

If it is flight, use the energy to create inspired movement forward

If it is freeze, use the energy to practice presence and stillness enabling you to tap into your intuition.

If it is fawn, use the energy to connect compassionately with others and rather than people-pleasing set boundaries that don’t cause you to lose your self

And here’s the remarkable thing –

as you become calmer, more connected, and more grounded in your truth, your children feel it too.

That’s generational healing in motion.

When you break the patterns that once held you back, you break them for your children – and for their children after them.

When you rise, your children rise.

Your home becomes a sanctuary for emotional expression – not a battleground of bottled-up tension.

This is the work that changes everything. 🌿
